Services & Techniques

At Altoona Chiropractic Center, we take great pride in providing the finest chiropractic wellness care to our patients. Below is a sampling of the different chiropractic services we offer in our Altoona office.

Chiropractic Care

We provide advanced spinal correction utilizing "state of the art" chiropractic techniques. Never in the history of chiropractic have we been able to provide the level of help and expertise that now exists. These newer correction methods are even safer, more comfortable and more effective than ever before. As a Doctor of Chiropractic, Dr. Donald MacKenzie has had years of training and experience in spinal adjustment.

Exams: A chiropractic exam is extremely thorough. It includes analysis of posture, structural alignment, range of motion, and soft tissues. Also, the doctor will check your heart, lungs, blood pressure, and reflexes. We also offer health scan testing and sports physical exams.

X-Rays: X-Ray is an important part of chiropractic treatment. Chiropractors use x-rays to check for misalignment, fractures, proper joint spaces, and even signs of disease and infection. You should notify your doctor if you are or may be pregnant.

Chiropractic Manipulation: Chiropractic manipulation is the art of correcting misalignments of the spinal column and extremities. This can be done manually (by hand) or through the use of drop-piece tables or mechanical stimulators.

Activator: The Activator is a small, hand-held tool that can be used in place of a manual adjustment. It delivers a low force impulse to a specific point on the body. Activator adjustment is very comfortable and is extremely useful in the correction of misalignments.

Electronic Activator Adjusting: This device is known as Arthrostim. It employs a hand held device that delivers a series of low force impulses and is used to correct spinal misalignments. Like the activator, Arthrostim is very comfortable and extremely effective.

Thompson Drop Piece: This form of adjustment uses a special table with sections that can be elevated. These sections then drop about ½ to ¾ of an inch when force is applied to them. This is very useful when used to supplement a manual chiropractic adjustment.

Extremity Adjusting: Misalignment is not just limited to the spine. It can take place anywhere in the skeleton. Chiropractic adjustment of the extremities is very effective in the treatment of shoulder, elbow, wrist, hand, knee, ankle and foot problems.

Applied Kinesiology: Procedure used on the muscles, ligaments using the hands.

Acupuncture: Acupuncture is a science that stimulates specific anatomical points to restore proper energy flow throughout the body. These points are stimulated by the use of pressure massage, cold laser, electronic stimulation, or slender acupuncture needles. Acupuncture can be used for acute and chronic pain relief, migraines, sinus problems, asthma, allergies, fatigue, anxiety, and a host of other problems. Many patients experience immediate relief following a treatment. The average course of acupuncture treatment is between 8 and 16 visits. (needle or electronic)

Allergy Desensitation: Allergy elimination is based on acupuncture principles of energy flow. When an allergen contacts the body its energy clashes with the body's energy. The result of this clash is the allergic response. By using acupressure and cold laser, practitioners can remove the energy clash triggered by the ingestion of or exposure to an allergen, thus lessoning allergy symptoms. This desensitation can be done in as little as one treatment and its effects can last up to several years.

Auricular therapy: Auriculotherapy is a therapeutic intervention in which stimulation of the auricle of the external ear is utilized to alleviate health conditions in other parts of the body. CHIROPRACTIC DOCTORS: Auriculotherapy has been used to facilitate spinal manipulations, deep tissue work, and motor point massage by reducing muscle spasms with auricular stimulation. Auriculotherapy can be used before or after chiropractic adjustments to stabilize postural habits.

EFT: Emotional Freedom Technique-is an emotional, needle free version of acupuncture that is based on new discoveries regarding the connection between your body's subtle energies, your emotions, and your health. EFT has been reported successful in thousands of cases covering a huge range of emotional, health and performance issues. It often works where nothing else will. This technique combines psychology with stimulation of acupressure points. It is useful for people wanting to lose weight, kick an addiction, or even get over a chronic illness. We offer EFT tapes to patients at only the cost of reproducing each tape.

Best: is a non-forceful, energy balancing hands on procedure used to help reestablish the full healing potential of the body.  Understanding the body makes no mistakes regarding health and longevity, B.E.S.T. principles acknowledge the concept of Interference we create with our conscious mind. This Interference caused imbalance in the autonomic nervous system leading to exhaustion of our organ systems over time.

Corrective Exercises

We teach our patients special "blueprint" exercises designed just for them to help strengthen and correct their own unique problem. These exercises can be performed in the comfort of your own home and can improve the effectiveness of your spinal correction by as much as 30-40%. In addition to skeletal misalignment, muscles and connective tissues can be out of place or strained by improper alignment and use. Specific exercises and stretches can help your body stay in balance and in health.

Lifestyle Advice

We often find it helpful to "coach" our patients on certain activities they should avoid or do differently to avoid aggravating their particular health challenge. Our goal is to help every patient achieve a fulfilling and happy lifestyle full of the activities they enjoy most. We recognize that each our patient is a whole person, and help them reach true health and wellness is a collaborate effort between our professionals and our patients.

Nutritional Counseling

We provide specific recommendations on nutritional supplements and healthy food choices to enhance our patient´s return to optimal health. Do you know which supplements and vitamins are good for youDr. Donald MacKenzie can provide a structured nutritional program based on your individual needs.

Brimhall Health Scan: This scan combines acupuncture pressure points with manual muscle testing. A point is stimulated while the doctor tests a muscle. The muscle reaction to the test can indicate a problem with the point being tested. This scan is quick, accurate, and non-invasive. It can be used to check for problems with internal organs, nutritional deficiencies, and bacterial, viral, and fungal infections.

Vitamins and Mineral: We recommend the best natural health supporting products, including vitamins, minerals, and homeopathic supplements along with orthopedic supports, on the market today.

Zyto: THE GLOBAL LEADER IN BIOCOMMUNICATION, is a technology company that produces health related software and equipment to facilitate decision making about healthcare and wellness. Zyto technology is based on the body's ability to respond to subtle stimuli. Using the body's natural energetic field, a communication link is established between the patient and the computer via the ZYTO hand cradle. Through this connection, zyto sends stimuli and then records the body's response. This conversation is called biocommunication, and it provides insights into health and wellness while suggesting nutritional supplements that may be beneficial to the patient.

Hormonal Testing: Saliva testing is an easy non-invasive way of assessing your patient's hormone balancing needs or status. This information allows you to supplement hormones according to a plan tailored to your patient's needs. Well-balanced hormones regulate everything from reproduction to emotions, general health and well-being. An imbalance of any one hormone can throw physical and mental health out of balance, causing aggravating and even serious health problems

Spinal & Postural Screenings

Posture and spinal screenings can reveal important health information and unlock the door to improved health and well-being. We provide screenings at area malls, community events, health fairs and places of employment. Contact us today to arrange a screening at your event or workplace.

SEMG: This scan uses a wand with 2 thermal probes. The wand is traced down the spine and gathers information on both sides of the spinal column. This information is displayed on a computer print-out and can be used to identify muscle and spinal imbalances.

To complement and enhance the healing effects of Dr. Donald  specific Chiropractic adjustment treatment, we at Altoona Chiropractic Center also provide the following physiological therapeutic procedures:

Interferential electrical muscle stimulation (IFC): This type of stimulation is characterized by the crossing of two electrical medium, independent frequencies that work together to effectively stimulate large impulse fibers. These frequencies interfere with the transmission of pain messages. This deep tissue penetration can be adjusted to stimulate parasympathetic nerve fibers for increased blood flow. Interferential Stimulation differs from TENS because it allows a deeper penetration of the tissue with more comfort and increased circulation.

Microamperage neural stimulation: is a modality providing electric current in millionths of an ampere. It has the ability to relieve pain, increase the rate of wound healing, increase protein synthesis, stimulate the regeneration of injured tissue, stimulate lymphatic flow and relieve myofascial trigger points. Because microcurrent flows at one millionth of an ampere it is delivered on the same scale as the current the body produces on its own in each cell, it is therefore physiologic.

Cryotherapy: (Cold Therapy) is the local or general use of low temperatures in medical therapy or the removal of heat from a body part. Its goal is to decrease cellular metabolism, increase cellular survival, decrease inflammation, decrease pain and spasm, promote vasoconstriction,

Diathermy - Ultra therm: A treatment that uses pulsations of electrical energy to generate heat and enhances local recovery. The high energy pulsations of electrical energy are applied for shortened periods of time. Used for chest congestion, bad sprains.

Moist heat therapy: Provides a moist heat to relieve muscle and emotional tension, improve circulation and can be use as a comfort pack to keep you warm.

Cold Laser: The cold laser uses visible and infrared light to add energy to our body at a cellular level. The effects of increasing cellular energy include increased membrane permeability, increased enzyme function, increased immune function, increased circulation, increased anti-oxidant production, increased endorphin production, and increased tissue regeneration. Cold laser is completely safe and has little or no effect on healthy tissues. This therapy is great for patients who need help with pain, sprains/strain, fractures, tendonitis, frozen shoulder, scar tissue, arthritis, allergies, heavy metal exposure, and wound healing.

Percussion: is a method of tapping on a surface to determine the underlying structure, and is used in clinical examination to assess conditions.

Neuropathy: ReBuilder: The ReBuilder is a battery operated device designed to assist patients suffering from peripheral neuropathy, which is characterized by pain, burning, numbness, and tingling in the legs and arms. The ReBuilder works by mimicking natural nerve impulses. This causes muscle contraction and relaxation, increased local blood flow, pain relief, better balance, faster healing, and increased nerve function. If you suffer from peripheral neuropathy, the ReBuilder can drastically improve your quality of life.

EB Pro Cellular Cleanse Therapy: "EB" Cellular Cleanse Therapy is used to balance the body's energy and aid in detoxification. It removes toxins and eliminates free radicals from the body. It also restores Ph and balances electromagnetic energy. This is done by creating an ionic energy field in a foot bath. While being treated, the patient will feel nothing and can actually see the toxins float to the top of the bath. After treatment, most patients feel lighter and more energetic. This therapy is great for patients with pain, edema, gout, headaches, arthritis, allergies, heavy metal exposure, and swollen joints.

Iontophersis: Is the passage of an electrical current onto the skin. It has a variety of uses in medicine. Depending on the area to be treated, you place your hands or feet into water. A gentle current of electricity passes through the water. A technician carefully and gradually increases the electrical current until you feel a light tingling sensation. The therapy lasts about 10-20 minutes and requires several sessions.

Ultrasound Therapy: Uses high-energy sound waves (those above the range we hear) to help ease painful joints and muscles. The waves are guided into the body from the head of a ultrasound machine. Ultrasound is the best form of heat treatment for soft tissue injuries. It is used to treat joint and muscle sprains, bursitis, and tendonitis.

The Kinesio® Taping Method: Involves taping over and around muscles in order to assist and give support or to prevent over-contraction. The first technique gives the practitioner the opportunity to give support while still maintaining full range of motion. This enables the individual to participate in his/her normal physical activities with functional assistance. The second technique, which is most commonly used in the acute stage of rehabilitation, helps prevent overuse or over-contraction and helps provide facilitation of lymph flow for an entire 24 hour period. Correctional techniques include mechanical, lymphatic, ligament/tendon, fascia, space and functional. Kinesio® Tex Tape can be used in conjunction with other therapies, including cryotherapy, hydrotherapy, massage therapy and electrical stimulation.

Microcurrent Face Lift: Non-surgical, non-invasive cosmetic procedure that activates the natural chemical in your own skin to give you a more vibrant look.
